![]() Getting your hands on the laser is not actually that hard if you know what you're doing. Just 1-3 W would probably be enough if you had good detectors. You don't need a megawatt or even 100 W of average power. We need to distinguish between average and peak power here. I guess you could do all these things on your own, but you would need about $1 million and a couple years of time to set it up. And you need to set this all up in a place with minimal background light and minimal atmospheric distortion (seeing). You need a big telescope to maximize the number of photons you get (we used the 3.5 meter telescope at Apache Point). You need fancy filters and timing electronics, because, when you are only getting 1 photon back, you need to turn the detectors on in as little a time as possible to minimize false detections from background light. You need sensitive detectors because, even if you shoot 10 17 photons up, you're only going to get about 1 photon back (we used avalanche photodiodes). You need laser that can shoot enough photons in a short pulse that you'll get some back in the return pulse (shoot 10 17 green 532 nm photons per pulse). I was a grad student on the APOLLO (Apache Point Observatory Lunar Laser Ranging Operation) project that was shown on Mythbusters. ![]() We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and by the depth of our answers. Because the Moon has been shown to “wobble” slightly, researchers believe that Earth’s tiny neighbor still has a warm fluid core, meaning that it’s not the frozen husk it might appear to be on the surface. The reflectors and the laser experiments have provided scientists with some incredible insights into the Moon’s movement as well as its makeup.

Tipping the scales at a little over 1,100 kilograms (2,425 pounds), the DC2 Integra Type R was initially offered in Championship White. It’s also worth remembering that Bridgestone was interested in plastering its name pretty much everywhere outside of Japan back then, which led to its pairing with Scuderia Ferrari. Slightly wider in track than its non-Type R siblings, the Integra Type R was originally equipped with Bridgestone tires, which is only natural given that Bridgestone is a Japanese company. Available in either Championship White or Gunmetal Gray, the light alloy wheels of the Integra Type R measure 15 by 6 inches. Stopping power comes in the guise of 262-mm ventilated front discs and 226-mm solid rear discs, backed up by specific tuning for the anti-lock braking system. Gifted with double wishbones at every corner, the DC2 ITR further boasts improved camber control by means of stiffer bearings for the rear wheels. The wheelbase, however, is unchanged from lesser Integras at 2,570 millimeters (101.2 in) from one axle to the other. Honda reinforced the rear shock towers, strengthened the subframes, and gave the bodyshell a few more spot welds to increase torsional rigidity. Starting with the shorter and stiffer springs, together with the anti-roll bars and strut braces, the R is anything but a daily driver. But as you’re well aware, the Civic turned out to be Honda’s best-selling R ever.Ī very different animal compared to the second-generation Integra Si, the third-generation Integra Type R isn’t for everyone. The commercial failure of the Type R-branded sports car made Honda realize that it’s better to liberalize the R with a more affordable model, and the Integra stood out as the best candidate at the time. Why did the Japanese manufacturer and its Acura subsidiary award this coveted handle to the Integra? You can thank the NSX Type R for not selling too well. Now that we’ve covered this part of the story, a question must be posed. Over in the United States, it was marketed under the somewhat boring RSX moniker. The DC nomenclature was further applied to the fourth-generation Integra in the guise of the DC5. This codename was employed by two variants of the ITR, the JDM variant with rectangular-ish headlights and the USDM variant with round headlights.Īn extremely rare variant of the Integra Type R is the DB8, which is pretty much a DC2 with two extra doors. First of all, it’s of vital importance to understand what DC2 means, namely the VTEC-equipped Integra Type R from the model’s third generation. Please consult with your bank for more information. It goes back hundreds of thousands of years, to the era of occult religions. The prehistorical perspective positions itself in mythical times, before the settlement of the Hungarians in the ninth century CE. In the subculture of the far right, the Turul has became a popular symbol for use in tattoos, fashion, and household objects. In spite of this, the local mayor, a member of the conservative Fidesz party, green-lighted the project. The board entitled to decide upon the issue ruled against the construction of the memorial. The story of a memorial depicting a Turul that was erected in the 12th district of Budapest in 2008 is symptomatic of the changing symbolism of the Turul. The symbol of the Hungarian National Socialist Workers Party, transformed following its prohibition in 1933. 5 Although the bill did not pass, if it were reintroduced today, it might pass easily, as Jobbik itself has presided over the new parliament’s cultural committee since April 2014. 4 In 2013, a bill introduced into the Hungarian parliament by seven MPs of the radical right Jobbik party would have imposed a one-year prison sentence on anyone caught defacing images of the Turul or the Miraculous Deer, another important figure in the Hungarian ethnogenetic myth. 3 Ironically, it was an EU-supported LIFE grant that led to the successful resettlement of the species in the region between 20. “Turul” was also briefly considered as a possible name for a new Hungarian currency introduced in 1926 (authorities ultimately chose the name “ pengő”). 2 Although the Saker Falcon isn’t among the more than one hundred species traditionally bred by Hungarians, in 2006 its temporary replacement on one side of the fifty forint coin by a different design generated anger on the far right, even though this depiction didn’t resemble the historic icon of the Turul. In 2004, the Hungarian parliament passed a resolution affirming the national symbolic value of many animal breeds native to Hungary. Note the Turul feather in Árpád’s helmet. The first is “Emese’s Dream,” in which the progenitress of the Hungarian people is impregnated by a Turul and gives birth to the Árpád Clan, which ruled Hungary during the country’s golden age, from the tenth to the thirteen century CE. The Turul as a symbol is present in two main narratives from ancient Hungarian legend. Its origins and age are still debated, but it probably dates from the Avar Khaganate, sixth to seventh century CE.Īccording to researchers, the cult of the Turul is based on the totemistic relationship between the nomadic Hungarian tribes and the Saker Falcon, a hunting bird of the Central Asian steppe. But Heisman, who as the coach at Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama (eventually renamed Auburn University) had come to Atlanta to scout Warner’s team, kept turning it over in his head on the train ride home through the flatlands of West Georgia. North Carolina won the game on that lone touchdown, 6-0, and newspaper accounts the next day mentioned little about the peculiar nature of the play (one local correspondent simply called it a “seventy-yard run,” and the Atlanta Constitution called it a “fumble pass”). Georgia coach Glenn “Pop” Warner stormed at the official, who, pleading ignorance, allowed the play to stand. It fluttered for a moment, and then it landed in the arms of stunned North Carolina teammate George Stephens, who tucked it under his arm and ran and didn’t stop running until he reached the Georgia end zone some 70 yards later. The ball was typically clutched under the arm or lateraled underhand rather than hurled forward, and so it looked to many in the crowd as if it had been knocked out of the player’s hands by a defender rather than deliberately thrown. ![]() It happened so fast, amid such a flurry of chaos, that it was easy to miss it altogether, which was what happened to the official on the field in charge of recognizing such illegalities. Heisman watched the ball totter through the air from a few feet away and wondered if he’d just witnessed the thing that might save this sport, which had itself become a burgeoning American institution. P erhaps because of that, Heisman more fully understood the social and mechanical challenges football was facing, and he viewed the game through a more progressive lens as the nation reckoned with its own radical cultural and political movement. His name was John Heisman, and at age 26, he was 10 years younger than Camp. It was different because, unlike with Camp - who would go on to become the pre-eminent figure in the early history of football, and who would come to believe that the forward pass was a fundamental betrayal of the game’s central principles - this particular quirk in the historical continuum took place at just the right moment, in front of just the right person. This type of thing had been done before - it happened, in fact, in 1876, when a Yale football player named Walter Camp hurled the ball forward to a teammate as he was being tackled by a Princeton defender (in that case, the official tossed a coin to determine the result of the play and awarded a touchdown to Yale). This is how progress so often occurs in football: With an idea manifesting itself out of sheer necessity. It was neither smooth nor aesthetically beautiful, but it was a forward pass nonetheless, one of the first of its kind in competitive play, attempted without any real foresight at all. It moved both laterally (which was within the rules) and upfield (which was not). Instead, Whitaker took a few steps to his right, and then performed perhaps the most impactful ad-lib in the history of American sports: He tossed the ball. If he kicked the ball, it might be smothered and returned for a touchdown, and he in turn might be smothered along with it, potentially crushing his unprotected skull or shattering an unpadded limb in the process. The North Carolina player, Joel Whitaker, was trapped near his own goal line and driven largely by desperation. In that moment, in an industrial nation nearing the turn of the 20th century, the gospel of football had just begun to manifest itself nationwide, and yet at the same time the sport had become so oppressively violent that there was growing angst about whether it even had a future at all.
